Queen Latifah
Dana Elaine Owens better known as Queen Latifah, is an American rapper actress and singer. The role of Queen Latifah on television, film and music has won numerous awards. This includes an Golden Globe Award two Screen Actors Guild Awards Two Image Awards A Grammy Award In addition, she has six Grammy nominations, an Emmy Award Nomination and an Academy Award. Queen Latifah was born in Newark, NJ. Her parents are Rita Owens Sr. and Lancelot Owens Jr. The couple divorced when Latifah was ten. Latifah attended a Catholic school and was educated in Newark New Jersey. She attended the Baptist church. Latifah is a word that means gentle and generous. The name was given by her cousin to her when she was aged eight. Latifah's height of 5'10" allowed her to be a formidable forward in high school. The song she sang was"Home" from The Wiz at a performance in high school. Latifah was part of the Ladies Fresh, a rap collective that started her journey into beatboxing. Latifah was among the members of the original form of Flavor Unit which at that the time was comprised of MCs who were grouped around producer DJ Mark the 45 King. Mark James, aka DJ Mark the45 King, recorded the rap of Queen Latifah, aka Princess of the Posse. Then he gave it to Yo! MTV Raps the Fab Five Freddy. The song got the attention of Tommy Boy Music employee Dante Ross who was signed by Latifah and, in 1988, released her debut single Wrath of My Madness.
